Welcome! All of us in Pre-Professional Health Advising are excited to work with you along your journey at JMU as you explore, prepare, and apply to Dental School!

Advising for first-year students and sophomores focuses on preparation, requirements, making plans, and exploring opportunities.

Advising for juniors, seniors, and alumni focuses on final coursework, timing of the DAT, the application process, choice of schools, letters of recommendation and gap year opportunities.

New to the minor? Your first step is to sign up to attend the one-hour seminar, PPH 101! Continue on to the next page for more information.

Before you meet with a PPH advisor, we encourage you to give your best attempt at completing this Pre-Dent Academic and Activity Planner.  Download the PreDent Advising Worksheet Download Download the PreDent Advising Worksheet   Bring this to your appointment (a draft is just fine!!).   We can review your academic plan together and I will be happy to provide feedback and/or suggestions to consider.

How to Schedule an Appointment:

You can now view your advisor availability and schedule a meeting in MyMadison Connect (via MyMadison). Click on the gold "schedule appointment" button on the right side, select the type (virtual or in-person) of appointment, choose a day/time and enter a reason and you're all set! You can cancel, track and schedule your appointments all in one location.

Here is a great step-by-step tutorial for using MyMadison Connect

Scheduling an Advising Appointment – Best Practices:

We expect all students to take personal responsibility for commitments – including a scheduled meeting. If circumstances arise ahead of time, or last minute, please communicate any necessary requests to cancel/reschedule the meeting.

If you are new to the minor, we ask that you complete PPH 101 prior to a one-on-one advising session.

If you have questions regarding your academic plan and course registration, we strongly encourage you to meet with a PPH Madison Advising Peer (MAP).

As your Pre-Health Advisor, we will:

  • Offer education, information, encouragement, and guidance on your post-graduate planning
  • Assist you in defining, developing and following realistic academic goals
  • Assist you in identifying/selecting appropriate health care and patient care experiences
  • Create an open, respectful, and supportive environment for all abilities, sexual orientations, genders, races, cultures, religions, and socioeconomic statuses
  • Identify your special interests and/or needs and refer you to appropriate resources

As a Pre-Health student, I understand and recognize the importance of taking ownership of my journey:

  • I will monitor programs of interest, regularly, to stay up-to-date on admissions requirements
  • I will proactively use PPH resources in planning my journey
  • I will use academic advising services to develop my degree completion and graduation timeline
  • I will exhibit professional behavior, including communication, at all times, even in times of stress or panic.
